Apple Maps and Weather Apps Move Crimea Back to Ukraine

A weird sort of stand by Apple against Russia. Kind of. The Mac Observer says Apple’s Maps app and Apple’s Weather app now list Crimea as part of Ukraine. The piece reminds readers that Russia invaded and annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. According to a piece from Mashable, until this week’s change, Crimea was not listed as part of any country in either app.

Here’s the annoying part: This might not be true in Russia. According to The Mac Observer:

In 2019 the Russian State Duma requested that Apple display Crimea as part of its country, and Apple complied. At the time, when viewed from inside Russia, Crimea was shown as Russian territory in Apple Maps and Weather.

But not outside. Outside, it was no-man’s land. Outside Russia now, Crimea is part of Ukraine. What the region looks like inside Russia on Maps and Weather is currently unclear.
